GPU Software Engineer, Rendering and Sensor Simulation
Based in Bristol
Salary from £53,000 to £60,000 + bonus | Hybrid, 2 to 4 days on site
Game engines render the world for human eyes. This team renders it for a complex defence system.
You’ll write C++ and GPU code (CUDA, OpenGL or Vulkan) that simulates how radar and electro-optical sensors see targets, terrain and atmosphere. It has to be physically accurate, and fast enough to be useful. This is called scene generation. It’s used to test and certify new weapon systems, and to check how systems already in service will cope with new threats.
Before you read on: you must be a British citizen due to security clearance requirements(dual nationals with British citizenship are fine).
What you’ll do
-
Build 3D rendering and physics-based simulation software in C++, running on the GPU
-
Build new capability from scratch, and use GPU acceleration to speed up existing products
-
Turn RF or EO/IR physics models into efficient, maintainable libraries and applications
-
Integrate your rendering engines into software and hardware test environments
-
Work with programme stakeholders on requirements, risks and technical options
-
Spend real time on research, including AI, and help decide where the simulation capability goes next
You’ll be in a small software team with plenty of independence. You only need a background in one of RF or EO/IR, and you’ll get to work in both.
What you’ll need
Essential:
-
Strong, practical C++ development experience
-
Hands-on GPU programming with at least one of CUDA, OpenGL or Vulkan
-
A working understanding of the physics behind RF or EO/IR propagation and sensing, and experience turning physical models into software
-
Good engineering habits: unit and system testing, Git, CI/CD, and code someone else can maintain
-
A degree in Software Engineering, Physics, Engineering, Maths or similar, or equivalent professional experience
Desirable:
-
Experience with real-time rendering, graphics engines or simulation engines (games, VFX and HPC backgrounds are welcome)
-
Experience with radar, sensor modelling or synthetic environments
-
Experience in defence or another regulated engineering field
Your experience can come from industry, a PhD or research post, or a serious independent project. What matters is that you can show it.
What’s in it for you
-
£53,000 to £60,000 depending on experience
-
Bonus of up to £2,500
-
Pension of up to 14% combined
-
Up to 15 extra flexi days a year, plus paid overtime
-
Flexible working welcome, and enhanced parental leave of up to 26 weeks
-
Subsidised meals, free parking and a healthcare cash plan
