Software Architect
Location:                 Home working with 1 day a week onsite in Havant
Salary:                      £70,000 to £100,000 (dependant on experience) + excellent benefits
We currently have an exciting opportunity for a Software Architect to lead software architectural activities and software support to business development activities within a global leading defence engineering organisation.
You will collaborate with the Business Development team on a portfolio of programmes and business pursuits ranging from development of programme and technical strategy, conduct of technical studies and assessments, and transition into programme delivery and on-contract growth. The role involves customer and supplier-facing activities and requires an ability to exercise initiative in the context of a long-term technical and strategic vision.

This is a key role within the business and will offer you the opportunity to play a significant part in the ongoing success of the business.

Software Architect Responsibilities
  • Taking ownership of enterprise-wide initiatives and planning, documenting, implementing, and maintaining software solutions using internally created or off-the-shelf products.
  • Leading complex software design activities exploiting state-of-the-art knowledge of multiple technologies and planning, design, and analysis methodologies.
  • Leading the design and documentation of the software development and integration process, e.g., Software Development Plan, Software Architecture Plan, Software Release Process etc.
  • Ensuring software is developed through the SDLC according to the relevant Software Development Plans.
  • Develop candidate software solutions, including estimation of development schedule, based on broad customer requirements and outline of technical solution concepts; derive key elements of system and software specifications from high level system requirements.
  • Influencing and shaping the design of complex systems, including ensuring that software architecture supports accreditation against safety/airworthiness regulatory standards and other contractual requirements.
  • Providing support to Business Development and Capture Management, bringing software architectural and technical knowledge to inform BD strategies and solutions.
  • Driving cutting-edge solutions that directly contribute to UK national security, developing solutions through Model-Based Engineering and other techniques.
  • Owning initiatives to drive continuous improvement, innovation, and technical excellence.
  • Proactively setting the direction for use of new technologies and tools and developing roadmaps which have the support of relevant stakeholders.
  • Providing estimates for new work and internal projects, and contributing to the design, capture, and presentation of meaningful metrics to track progress.
  • Serving as organization Software spokesperson on programs.
  • Liaising with other engineering disciplines to ensure a joined-up approach to program challenges.
  • Engaging in transfer of knowledge to staff using documentation, user guides, development guides, white board sessions, seminars and 1-2-1 training.
  • Being able to present to customers and collaborate with them effectively, building trusting, productive relationships.
Software Architect skills and experience
  • Extensive experience of software design, development, and assurance across the whole software lifecycle, including agile, waterfall, and hybrid frameworks.
  • Experience with any of the following: airborne systems, electronic warfare, maritime combat systems, command/control systems, data links.
  • Previous experience in some of Ada 95, C/C++, or C#.
  • Ability to synthesize customer requirements into software solutions that take into account technical, schedule and cost constraints.
  • Clear and concise communication and presentation skills with the ability to convey complex technical concepts to technical and non-technical stakeholders, and to influence and invoke change throughout the organisation.
  • Experience with the design, development, and quality assurance of military safety-critical systems in accordance with Def Stan 00-055 and related standards.
  • Knowledge of regulatory and safety standards (Safety Integrity Levels, RTCA DO-178, Military EMC, Environmental) and other Airborne and Maritime standards.
  • Understanding of the capture process, including contributing to major bids.
