Research and Development Technology Lead
Location:           Bristol
Salary:                £50,000 to £65,000 + bonus, flexible working options & good pension
Working with a world leading engineering organisation, we have a fantastic opportunity for a Research and Development Lead who will coordinate external research frameworks, principally the Weapon Sector Research Framework (WSRF) and the Complex Weapons Integrated Technology Partnership (CWITP).
The role sits within the System Design: Emerging Portfolio & Capability function and Future Products Department. It is uniquely placed to both gather research needs from Future Products and to pass on the technology advancements back into those Future Products. The goal is to enable new products to draw on promising lower TRL technologies and ensuring that there is a real exploitation path for the funded activities.
The Role would have a functional responsibility for the development and guidance of a small technology focused team, noting they are all expected to have a strong level of autonomy.
Research and Development Lead responsibilities include:
  • Interaction and influencing of the Research & Technology landscape, working with Portfolio, Programmes ‘Futures’ teams, Future Systems and commercial
  • Provide industrial insight and focus at WSRF planning team meetings including Order of Buy (OoB) prioritisation and the broader annual Planning Programme.
  • Provide representation during planning and OoB generation processes, in particular the exploitation priorities with a view to informing and influencing the overall prioritisation.
  • Identify, collate and prioritise research needs for informing Expert Panel (EP) and WSRF community.
    • Coordinate across Functions, Future Portfolio, Future Systems, Business Development etc to generate a consolidated view of business capability and technology needs.
  • Support technology road-mapping activities.
  • Attend WSRF meetings as required in support of OoB and transition to tasking.
  • Provide internal bid support as required and where appropriate.
  • Attend (either in person or via delegation through nominated representative) WSRF Delivery meetings for relevant tasks:
    • kick off meetings.
    • technical reviews.
    • progress review.
  • Review and recommend as appropriate applications for EP membership and WSRF partners.
  • Chair and lead a regular EP ‘Community of Interest’.
Research and Development Lead experience required
  • Experience of technology road mapping
  • Ability & willingness to take the lead in meetings and discussions where necessary
  • Experience of leading engineering teams across complex technology programmes
  • Domain knowledge across any of the following: Weapons systems, cameras, sensors, military platforms, RF systems, rockets, space/satellite
  • A background in/understanding of systems engineering
  • Experience of engaging with customers
