We are currently recruiting for a Commercial Manager to join an active, involved and motivated Commercial Team, in a Directorate committed to delivering Defence Capability to the UK Armed Forces and other World Governments, covering all aspects of the Product Lifecycle from concept to disposal.
 
The role will see you support the implementation of Commercial strategies to deliver maximum business advantage in line with the business plan in a Research and Development Environment. You will work with nominated Business Winning Managers, to produce credible bids and ensure the smooth transition of new business into current business as well as leading commercial aspects of multi-functional teams to produce high value/risk/complexity bids/quotations for submission to a customer.
 
Commercial Manager Responsibilities
  • Ensuring Contractual obligations are communicated, understood, and delivered consistent with our performance, time and cost obligations.
  • Drafting, writing and responding to day to day communication from Customers
  • Provide staff management, carry out staff performance and development reviews & provide co-ordination with other functions in order to promote team effectiveness and business achievement.
  • Identify and support requirements for Functional and Strategic Change activity and manage their implementation. Provides functional support and direction to team members and internal customers.
  • Produces and presents briefs for their line manager and, senior management on potential issues and preferred outcomes.
  • Lead the pricing strategy on bids and the strategy on contract bids
  • Advises and influences bid and project teams in the interpretation of price and risk data and consequential actions.
  • Negotiate high value/risk complexity commercial arrangements within agreed parameters. Provide advice, guidance and supervision to others in respect to negotiation
  • Drafting, negotiating and agreeing with customers more complex contracts, contract amendments and Agreements within agreed guidance and policy instructions and advising Procurement to ensure the proper flow down of terms and conditions to the supply chain
  • Provides expert technical advice, guidance and support to team members and internal customers.
  • Participates and lead in customer meetings for medium to high value bids and contracts.
  • Drafting, negotiation and signature of standard agreements. Reviewing other Team members draft agreements. Drafting non-standard agreements and gaining approval to sign through the approval process.  
  • Define commercial risk strategies for the most complex projects.  Provide advice and guidance on all areas of risk and risk aversion.  Develop risk sharing opportunities.
  • Manages major customer relationships. Agrees and implements programmes with major projects to meet both the company’s and customers’ needs and develops potential "work-round" solutions.
  • Promotes best practice and functional excellence.
  • Makes contractual decisions. Ensures appropriate commercial framework is in place to protect the company and to maximise business advantage.
 
Commercial Manager skills and qualifications required:
  • Experience and understanding of conditions of Contract and the legal connotations associated.
  • Experience of managing bids/proposal and successfully concluding appropriate contract arrangements.
  • Experience in dealing with the UK Ministry of Defence and/or other Government bodies/Industrial Organisations
  • Effective influencing and team working skills
  • Management skills
  • Experienced in a range of commercial issues and skills including contract management skills throughout the contract lifecycle
  • An understanding of Export Control issues and able to identify issues when they arise.
